Toronto's AI Buildout

What you need to know

Canada's AI buildout is advancing on two fronts at once. On Bay Street, Scotiabank, Sun Life, Telus, and Toronto-based consultancy Lightworks have formed The AI Consortium, pooling resources to build shared, sovereign AI infrastructure rather than renting it from U.S. hyperscalers. An hour up the 404, Markham is betting on the hardware side of the same problem — a cluster of deep-tech firms building ruggedized, sovereign edge-compute systems positioned to ride Canada's expanding defense-procurement spending. Different layers of the stack, same throughline: Canadian institutions trying to own their own AI infrastructure instead of leasing someone else's.
