The deal allows MediaTek to design custom AI chips that integrate directly into Nvidia's data center ecosystem, hedging against the shift toward vertical integration by hyperscalers.

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion into Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, a move designed to maintain its lead as the primary scaffolding for AI data centers even as major cloud providers move toward custom silicon, TechCrunch reports.

Under the agreement, MediaTek will utilize Nvidia's technology to design custom AI chips for hyperscalers and AI companies. These chips will be compatible with Nvidia-based data centers via the NVLink Fusion ecosystem, which enables fast communication between different chips regardless of the manufacturer. This strategy allows Nvidia to cede some ground to custom silicon while ensuring its platform remains the industry standard.

Dion Harris, Nvidia’s senior director of HPC and AI hyperscaler infrastructure solutions, told reporters that the partnership allows MediaTek's customers to standardize on Nvidia's rack-scale infrastructure and deploy custom chips alongside existing platforms. Harris noted that Nvidia expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago and now views itself as an AI infrastructure company.

The investment comes as Nvidia faces increasing competition from companies building their own chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia GPUs, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Nvidia recently established a similar, non-investment partnership with Amazon Web Services, which will integrate NVLink Fusion and deploy 2 million additional Nvidia GPUs.

Beyond the data center, the companies are expanding collaborations on consumer and automotive tech. This includes the DGX Spark developer desktop, the RTX Spark for AI PCs, and software-defined vehicle platforms. MediaTek's automotive offerings utilize Nvidia Drive AGX for autonomous driving and RTX graphics for vehicle cockpits.

MediaTek has not disclosed its specific custom AI chip customer list but previously stated in June it expects its custom data center ASIC business to generate $2 billion in revenue in 2026.
