Rising Operational Costs Squeeze Ontario Farmers Amid Trade Uncertainty

Surging freight, fuel, and maintenance expenses are thinning margins for local growers who lack control over market pricing.
Agricultural producers in Ontario are facing a surge in operational costs that threaten their stability, according to reporting from Global News Toronto.
Patrick Butters, owner of Butters Farms in St. Thomas, reports that while his ornamental pumpkin and gourd business is not currently impacted by tariffs, geopolitical issues and trade tensions are driving up costs. Butters noted that average trucking rates have increased by 30 per cent over the previous year, while cardboard packaging costs have risen approximately 20 per cent since the spring. These pressures are compounded by soaring costs for labour, fertilizer, and general farm inputs.
The financial strain extends to equipment and maintenance. Keith Currie, president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and a farmer near Collingwood, Ont., stated that the cost of diesel has "gone through the roof," noting it costs $2,500 to fill his combine. Currie highlighted that basic maintenance has also become significantly more expensive; changing hydraulic oil and filters in two tractors recently cost nearly $2,000, a task that cost roughly $500 five years ago.
Because growers have limited ability to raise prices without deterring customers, many are absorbing these increases. Brendan Gill, a relationship manager with TD Agriculture Services, told Global News Toronto that farmers are "at the mercy of the market" regarding commodity and input prices. To combat this uncertainty, Gill says producers are focusing on controllable variables, such as locking in future crop prices via contracts, pre-buying inputs, and diversifying crops.
For the Butters brothers, the future remains uncertain. Patrick Butters noted that while he currently pays no tariffs to cross the border, the shifting political landscape creates an "added level of unknown" for the business.
