In the software world, 'vibe coding' is the current darling of the low-code movement. Tools like Lovable and Replit have convinced a wave of non-developers that they can conjure full applications from simple text prompts. Now, a Toronto-based startup called Blueprint is attempting to port that same energy to the physical world.

As reported by BetaKit, Blueprint is positioning itself as the 'Lovable for hardware.' The premise is straightforward: users describe a gadget they want to build in plain language, and the AI generates a comprehensive project plan. We aren't just talking about a rough sketch; BetaKit reports that these plans cover mechanics, wiring, suggested off-the-shelf parts, and specific instructions on where to purchase them.

From a reviewer's perspective, the 'vibe' here is all about lowering the barrier to entry. Blueprint CEO David Feldt told BetaKit that traditional hardware design is often 'scattered,' 'tedious,' and heavily reliant on specialized human expertise. By automating the design phase, Blueprint claims to empower anyone to bring a hardware idea to reality regardless of their technical skill level.

But let's look at the actual output. According to BetaKit, Blueprint's users have already generated over 200,000 plans. The variety is eclectic, ranging from the practical—solar watering systems, wireless chargers, and robotic arms—to the eccentric, such as grappling-hook guns and pickleball launchers. One notable example cited by COO Sajeel Purewal is a client who runs a medical device company in India and used the software to prototype a urine-sampling machine.

However, there is a catch to this 'vibe coding' for hardware: the user still has to do the heavy lifting. BetaKit notes that the Blueprint model assumes users possess a 3D printer and basic soldering experience. The AI provides the map—down to the exact type of screws needed—but the user still has to execute the build, 3D print the casing, and test the electronics.

For now, Feldt is clear that this is a tool for 'one of ones' rather than mass production. He told BetaKit that the platform is designed for hobbyists and founders building early prototypes, rather than scalable products. The long-term 'North Star' vision, as described by Purewal, is to evolve into a hybrid of Amazon and Lovable that could either source components automatically or orchestrate the entire manufacturing process.

Investors are betting on this vision. Blueprint recently announced that it secured pre-seed funding totaling more than $1 million USD, which converts to $1.4 million CAD. This includes $225,000 USD in SAFEs from November and $820,000 USD in SAFE funding closed in May. The backers include Founders Inc, undisclosed angels, and a16z speedrun, the Silicon Valley accelerator where Feldt, Purewal, and CTO Pranav Seelam are currently based before their planned return to Toronto.

Whether this is a true paradigm shift or a high-tech parts generator remains to be seen, but the growth is undeniable. BetaKit reports the platform amassed over 175,000 users in just three months. While the company prohibits the design of explosives, ammo, and guns, it does allow consumer sporting goods like compound bows as it continues to refine its safety policies.
