The company is prioritizing efficiency and chip availability while rolling out other 2026 hardware releases.

Valve is still determining the "how and when" regarding the release of a Steam Deck 2, as first reported by The Verge. While the company has confirmed for years that a sequel will happen, Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais told IGN that the device will not launch until the company identifies the right chip.

Griffais emphasized that Valve is seeking a "leap" in performance without sacrificing battery life or power efficiency. While Griffais previously told IGN the team was "hard at work" on the handheld, he has not provided a specific release date.

This hesitation comes as Valve launches its full 2026 hardware lineup, which includes the Steam Machine, the Steam Controller, and the Steam Frame. The latter, a headset, saw its price rise to $1,059 due to what The Verge describes as "brutal RAM negotiations."

When asked by IGN if current hardware shortages have influenced the development of the Steam Deck 2, Griffais responded, "Not really." However, The Verge notes that Valve's strategy involves working backward from chip availability to design the hardware, leaving the timeline for the next-gen handheld uncertain.
