The Crown corporation's inclusion in the international network aims to connect Canadian defense startups with global capital and military demand.

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has joined an international investor network linked to the NATO Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA), as BetaKit first reported. According to the announcement made Monday, BDC is the only Canadian entity included in the initial list of network members, which also features U.S. defense primes such as Lockheed Martin and European investors including Expeditions.

The NATO DIANA accelerator is designed to link technology companies with capital, mentors, and military end-users to validate and develop new innovations. The newly formed NATO DIANA Capital Network serves as a bridge, placing these companies in front of a broader group of investors to stimulate defense spending.

Peter Dawe, a retired Major General and BDC’s vice-president of defence strategy, stated in a BDC LinkedIn video that the network provides a direct line into the innovation and demand created by the 32 NATO allies.

Several Canadian firms have already gained entry into the accelerator, including the Ottawa-based defense software startup Tactiql and the Québec-based rocket company Reaction Dynamics, BetaKit reports.

This move aligns with a broader expansion of BDC's role within the defense sector. The Crown corporation has established a $6-billion CAD defense platform operating across its investment and banking divisions. Additionally, BDC CEO Isabelle Hudon has been deeply involved in the creation of an international defense bank intended to support defense contracts for allied companies and governments, though the host city for this bank has not yet been determined.

Beyond the DIANA network, BetaKit notes that Canada entered negotiations in July to join a subdivision of the NATO Innovation Fund.
