Investors are betting nine-figure sums on AI-native security startups while experts warn that human-in-the-loop defenses are obsolete.

As TechCrunch first reported, investors are directing significant capital toward startups designed to create security for an AI-native landscape. This surge in funding comes amid rising concerns over rogue agents and AI safety, driving up cybersecurity stocks and fueling valuations that TechCrunch notes would not have been feasible a few years ago. Specifically, the outlet reports that companies Instinct and Simile have secured nine-figure checks.

Shardul Shah, a partner at Index Ventures, told TechCrunch's Equity podcast that the traditional cybersecurity model is breaking. Shah argues that periodic, human-in-the-loop security is no longer capable of keeping pace with current threats. Because of this shift, Index Ventures continues to invest in AI-native security companies at stages that previously would have required significantly more proof of concept.

Shah's track record in the sector includes investing in six consecutive rounds for the cloud security startup Wiz, which TechCrunch reports was acquired by Google earlier this year for $32 billion in one of the largest acquisitions to date.
