Surging electricity demand from AI facilities and extreme weather are pushing aging transmission networks toward a tipping point.

U.S. electricity grids are facing significant stress as a surge in demand from the artificial intelligence sector and factories coincides with extreme seasonal weather, as the Financial Post reported.

Data centers, which require constant power, are contributing to a shrinking of power reserves while households increase air conditioning use to combat temperatures exceeding 100°F. Timothy Fox, an analyst at ClearView Energy Partners LLC, noted that regional transmission operators (RTOs)—which manage grids for over 150 million Americans—have expressed concerns that the system is reaching "tipping points."

Recent emergency alerts have impacted grids across more than half of the U.S. states, including the Southwest Power Pool and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). However, Bloomberg News reports that perhaps the greatest strain has centered on PJM Interconnection LLC. Serving 67 million people from Washington, DC, to Chicago, PJM's territory includes Virginia’s "Data Center Alley," a major hub for AI facilities.

On July 2, power usage in the PJM region reached an unprecedented 168 gigawatts, surpassing a record that had held for twenty years. While meteorologist Ed Vallee of Atmospheric G2 stated that triple-digit temperatures are not unusual for the eastern PJM region, the combination of aging equipment and a sudden end to stagnant power demand is testing the reliability of the network.
