A 36-year-old faces assault charges after an on-duty employee was attacked from behind in the Bloor-Yonge area.

A Toronto man has been arrested and charged following an unprovoked attack on a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) employee on August 14, 2026, according to reporting from CityNews Toronto.

Investigators state that the victim, an on-duty electrical worker, was taking a break in the Bloor-Yonge area shortly after 8 a.m. when the incident occurred. CityNews Toronto reports that Anthony Christopher David McLaughlin, 36, allegedly approached the worker from behind and stabbed him before fleeing the scene.

Paramedics transported the victim to a hospital with injuries described as serious but non-life-threatening. The employee has since been released and is recovering at home.

Police say McLaughlin turned himself in on Saturday, August 15. He has been charged with two offenses: assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. He is scheduled for a bail hearing on Sunday.

In a statement shared Saturday, TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali condemned the attack, stating that violence against TTC workers in the line of duty is "completely unacceptable" and emphasizing that employee safety is paramount. Lali further noted that recent amendments to the Criminal Code have strengthened the treatment of assaults against public transit workers to reinforce that such violence is never acceptable.
