The modern commute is being transformed into a government tracking event through the integration of wireless signal detection and automatic license plate readers. As reported by Ars Technica, a system called SignalTrace, marketed by the security company Leonardo, is designed to recognize groups of consumer devices—such as smartphones and smartwatches—that regularly travel together.

According to Ars Technica, SignalTrace identifies recurring electronic signatures from Bluetooth or radio frequency identification tags. By associating these signals with license plate records and time-stamped locations, the software allows investigators to identify targets even when a plate number is unknown. While Leonardo claims the system "does not identify people" because it only collects electronic signatures, the reporting notes that police can easily deduce identities by linking a signal to a registered vehicle or a specific home address.

This capability shifts the investigative focus toward movements and associations before a person's identity is even established. Ars Technica reports that SignalTrace is already a marketed capability, with devices installed in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and predecessor technology appearing on a New York state contract price list.

The privacy implications are severe. Ars Technica cites a study in the journal Scientific Reports showing that just four time-and-place data points can uniquely identify 95% of people in a dataset. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has recently reinforced privacy protections regarding physical movements. In *Carpenter v. United States* and the June 2026 decision in *Chatrie v. United States*, the court held that obtaining location data constitutes a Fourth Amendment search, noting that even short-term monitoring can expose political and family associations.
