While tariffs grab the headlines, the skyrocketing cost of RAM and high-density compute creates a brutal Capex reality for Canada's AI startups.

Following a collapse in trade talks, the U.S. has imposed tariffs on $28 billion of goods, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs effective Sept. 8. While the federal government has rolled out a $7.5-billion support package, as BetaKit first reported, the broader tech sector faces a more insidious threat: the unsustainable cost of hardware.

**The 'Chipflation' Reality** Aggressive investment by tech giants into AI compute infrastructure has triggered a shortage in computer memory, driving up the cost of random-access memory (RAM) and other critical hardware—a phenomenon described as "chipflation."

Kevin Jia, co-founder of Canadian PC maker Quoted Tech Computers, told BetaKit that while hyperscalers are largely insulated by massive budgets, the rest of the market is feeling the squeeze. This manifests as price hikes across smartphones, tablets, and servers, with the most severe impact on GPU- and RAM-heavy hardware.

**The Startup Squeeze** For Canada's deep tech and AI scale-ups, these costs create a significant barrier to entry. Jia explained to BetaKit that Canadian startups already face more funding scrutiny than those in Silicon Valley; the rising cost of high-density compute further strains these limited budgets.

**The Tariff Fog** Adding to the crisis is the complexity of origin-based tariffs. Reporting from The Globe and Mail indicates that electronics and electrical equipment exports—totaling roughly $4.4 billion USD ($6.1 billion CAD) last year—will be among the hardest hit.

Jia told BetaKit that determining the impact is "like finding a needle in a haystack" because U.S. Customs and Border Protection often designates products based on a single component, such as the CPU, rather than final assembly. For example, Quoted Tech products are treated as Vietnamese in origin because of the CPU, despite the majority of work being done in Canada.

**The Outlook** Jia offered a grim assessment to BetaKit, noting there is no alternative market for these chips. His advice to buyers is to avoid timing the market and purchase necessary hardware now, as normality may not return until the end of 2027.
