The promise of generative AI is a massive increase in efficiency, with some tasks completed 2-100x faster than previous benchmarks. However, as Rick Manelius reports via Hacker News, this acceleration often leads to a productivity paradox where users create an endless cycle of "make-work" by launching a high volume of simultaneous projects.

Manelius describes a pattern of using AI to rapidly build numerous proof-of-concept projects—reaching as many as 40 in his own experience—which ultimately leads to burnout. He argues that the seductive nature of AI tools like Claude can trick operators into believing they can manage an infinite workload, when human capacity remains finite.

To achieve high-impact results, Manelius suggests a shift from horizontal expansion to vertical depth. He references Greg McKeown's concept of "Essentialism," advocating for doing fewer things but doing them better.

This approach emphasizes the critical importance of the final 1% of effort. Citing an analogy by Garry Tan regarding the difference between a partial and total eclipse, Manelius notes that while the final polish may represent a small fraction of the total output, it creates a 100x difference in the final experience. This means resisting the urge to ship "good enough" work and instead utilizing AI-driven time savings to invest the necessary revisions to move a project from a "B/B-" to an "A+."
