The e-commerce giant is moving beyond product search to allow AI agents to execute full transactions via WebMCP.

Shopify is expanding the role of AI agents on its platform, moving from simple product discovery to full transactional capabilities. According to TechCrunch, the company announced Monday that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on eligible merchants' sites.

While competitors such as Amazon and Adidas are reportedly blocking AI agents from making purchases on behalf of users, Shopify is integrating these agents into the checkout process. The update introduces three specific tools—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—which allow agents to inspect checkout screens, modify delivery options or customer addresses, and submit orders once the buyer provides authorization.

Gil Greenberg, a Shopify staff product manager for agentic commerce, explained on X that these WebMCP tools provide structured APIs designed via the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to ensure accurate commerce facts and required disclosures. This approach allows agents to operate efficiently without relying on web scraping or screenshots of HTML designed for humans.

Shopify previously supported WebMCP for storefronts and carts, and it continues to offer a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent operations. TechCrunch reports that Shopify has already established direct partnerships for agentic commerce with AI agents Muse and Instinct, with the Instinct partnership announced the same day as the checkout update.
