Toronto and York Region school boards have increased facility rental fees, forcing community groups to raise prices or face potential closure.

Public school boards in Toronto and York Region have implemented significant permit fee increases for facility rentals, including gyms, cafeterias, and auditoriums, effective Sept. 1. According to reporting from CBC Toronto, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) say the adjustments are necessary to account for inflation and the actual cost of caretaking during weekend rentals.

Zoya McGroarty, a spokesperson for the TDSB, stated that previous fees failed to keep pace with costs, forcing the board to divert hundreds of thousands of dollars from other areas to offset expenses. Similarly, YRDSB spokesperson Licino Miguelo noted the board can no longer over-subsidize fees and has adjusted them to be cost-neutral to ensure funds are properly allocated to classrooms.

Local organizations are reporting drastic price jumps. Simon Rogers, who operates a basketball league at TDSB's Central Technical School, told CBC Toronto his permit quote rose from just over $3,400 last year to $9,818 this year. Stephen Paine, president of the non-profit York North Basketball Association, reported that his organization's permit fees surged from approximately $45,000 last year to around $208,000 this year.

Paine noted that the association has already been forced to increase programming costs and has heard from families who can no longer afford the fees. While the YRDSB maintains it still offers reduced rates for non-profits and charities, the board has stopped offering other subsidies, as stated on its website.
