OpenAI Launches Math Advisory Group Amid Academic Backlash

The company is establishing a bridge to the mathematical community after claiming its models solved over 100 open problems.

As TechCrunch first reported, OpenAI has established the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, which will be hosted as an independent body at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

The move follows the sudden publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem and claims from OpenAI that an internal model has resolved more than 100 other open mathematical problems. These rapid developments have sparked concern among scholars; TechCrunch reports that 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians recently signed an open letter claiming AI labs are threatening intellectual work in a race to solve famous problems.

While the new group is intended to give mathematicians a voice and assess the significance of results, its actual power is limited. TechCrunch notes that the group serves in an advisory capacity and will not be responsible for advising OpenAI on the pace of its internal mathematical progress. The Institute for Advanced Study confirmed in a press release that the group lacks decision-making power at any AI company.

Initial membership includes nine prominent mathematicians. TechCrunch highlights that only one of these members, Camillo De Lellis of the Institute for Advanced Study, was also a signatory of the Fields Medalists' letter. Members are unpaid but maintain independence through the ability to offer unsolicited advice and go public with their views.
