As the City of Toronto first reported, Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth) met with representatives from Le Théâtre français de Toronto, Neighbours Community Homes, and Woodbourne on July 31, 2026, to break ground on a community-focused development at 1111 and 1117 Danforth Ave.
The project will provide more than 400 mixed-income rental homes. At 1117 Danforth Ave., a development operated by non-profit Neighbours Community Homes will include 81 new units, 27 rental replacements, 40 affordable homes, and 41 rent-controlled homes. To support the effort, the City is providing more than $14 million in incentives through the Rental Housing Supply Program (RHSP) and over $13 million in capital funding.
The project leverages a partnership between the non-profit and private sectors to lower construction costs through shared infrastructure. While 1117 Danforth Ave. focuses on affordable and deeply affordable housing, the adjacent development at 1111 Danforth Ave. is being led by developer Woodbourne.
Integrating cultural amenities into the residential plan, the base of 1111 Danforth Ave. will provide a permanent location for Le Théâtre français de Toronto. City officials describe the theatre as a vibrant cultural hub intended to provide inclusive programming and theatrical vitality for the neighborhood. Occupancy for the community is expected to begin in 2029.
