The company is deploying equity investments and network access to help domestic SMBs penetrate military and space markets.

Brampton-based MDA Space has introduced MDA Space LaunchPad Ventures, a strategic funding program designed to make equity investments in Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) developing space and defence technologies. According to reporting from BetaKit, the initiative aims to help startups build capabilities tailored to the requirements of allied militaries and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Shawn Roy, MDA senior director of corporate development, told BetaKit that the primary obstacle for Canadian defence SMBs is not technology or talent, but rather access to revenue opportunities, networks, and customers. Roy noted that MDA Space intends to leverage its 55 years of relationship-building to open these doors for portfolio companies. In addition to capital, the program provides access to a government contract pipeline, engineering expertise, and 49North, MDA's recently launched defence subsidiary.

MDA has identified 25 focus areas aligned with sovereign priorities, including orbital signal-jamming technology, autonomous systems, air navigation, and satellites. While Roy declined to disclose the total value of the program, he stated that MDA intends to collaborate with other investors. The company has previously backed firms such as Maritime Launch Services, based in Halifax.

BetaKit reports that this move comes as the Government of Canada plans to invest billions of dollars to build a robust domestic defence industry and reduce reliance on the United States. Other established players are making similar moves; for example, Ottawa-based contractor Calian has launched Calian Ventures, a $100-million CAD platform to help firms validate and sell solutions to the CAF.
