MDA Space Launches Venture Arm to Bolster Canadian Defense Tech

Brampton-based MDA Space has introduced MDA Space LaunchPad Ventures, a strategic funding program designed to identify and make equity investments in Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) specializing in space and defense technology, BetaKit reports.

According to BetaKit, the initiative aims to help startups scale solutions that align with the needs of allied militaries and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). MDA has identified 25 specific focus areas tied to sovereign priorities, including orbital signal-jamming technology, autonomous systems, air navigation, and satellites.

Shawn Roy, MDA senior director of corporate development, told BetaKit that while talent and technology are present, Canadian defense SMBs often lack access to revenue opportunities, networks, and customers. Roy stated that the program leverages MDA's 55 years of relationship-building to open those doors. Beyond capital, portfolio companies will gain access to MDA's engineering expertise, a government contract pipeline, and 49North, a recently launched defense subsidiary.

While Roy declined to disclose the total value of the program, he noted that MDA intends to collaborate with other investors. MDA has previously backed firms such as Halifax-based Maritime Launch Services through its original 2018 LaunchPad program, which served as a collaboration point for academic groups and SMBs.

This move comes as the Government of Canada plans to invest billions of dollars to build a more robust domestic defense industry and decrease reliance on the U.S. BetaKit notes that other established players are taking similar steps, such as Ottawa-based contractor Calian, which launched the $100-million CAD Calian Ventures platform to help firms validate and sell solutions to the CAF.
