Durham Regional Police have arrested four individuals and laid 229 criminal charges following an investigation into an organized criminal network, according to reporting from Global News Toronto. The investigation, titled Project Magenta, linked the group to 36 separate incidents occurring between June and September across Toronto and the Durham Region.
Acting Deputy Chief Glenn Courneyea stated that the group's actions caused significant financial damage to businesses and undermined community safety. One specific incident cited by police occurred on June 14, when suspects allegedly stole roughly $148,000 in merchandise from a trading card retailer in Ajax.
Investigators allege the group targeted jewelry stores, cannabis stores, and pawn shops, often driving stolen vehicles through storefronts to gain entry. The suspects are also accused of stealing wallets and bank cards from vehicles in commercial parking lots. Charges include robbery, motor vehicle theft, break-and-enter, and possession of property obtained by crime, as well as the possession of electronic devices and master keys used for vehicle theft, Global News Toronto reports.
The accused include two 18-year-old Toronto residents facing 105 charges, and two minors, aged 15 and 16, who face more than 100 combined charges. Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the minors cannot be identified.
Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira noted that while crime decreased earlier this year compared to 2025, recent increases have offset those gains. Moreira stated that the arrests and charges demonstrate the service's commitment to holding offenders accountable.
