Combat debuts in eastern Ukraine reveal that low-cost kamikaze drones can defeat expensive armored defenses through iterative attrition.

Russian armored vehicles recently entered the battlefield in the Donetsk Oblast region of eastern Ukraine equipped with the Arena-M active protection system, as first reported by Ars Technica. Designed to intercept incoming threats using radar and projectiles, the system's combat debut on July 22 met with limited success.

Euromaidan Press reported that Ukrainian defenders destroyed at least seven T-72B3A tanks during a Russian company-size assault, including vehicles outfitted with the Arena-M. While journalists Dmytro Putiata and Rob Lee noted that the system successfully shot down some drones, Ukrainian soldiers reported needing between 15 and 20 drones to destroy each tank.

According to Militarnyi, Russian engineers have worked on the Arena-M since 2019, but the system has struggled to detect small drones that fly more unpredictably and slowly than the missiles the system was originally designed to counter. Furthermore, the system's limited supply of countermunitions—roughly a dozen—is easily overwhelmed by drone swarms.

The Institute for the Study of War stated in an August 9 update that the Arena-M likely will not be an effective standalone countermeasure. The cost disparity remains a critical factor; while tanks cost millions of dollars, Ukrainian kamikaze drones can cost as little as $400 each.

This vulnerability is not unique to Russian hardware. Ars Technica noted that Israeli Merkava 4 tanks, equipped with Trophy active protection systems from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, have also been targeted by explosive-laden quadcopter drones used by Hezbollah in Lebanon.
