Superior Court Justice Gillian Roberts found Bilal Abdelmouniim guilty on 23 counts, but police tracking data reveals a series of high-end thefts that persisted despite law enforcement surveillance.
A Toronto man has been convicted on all 23 counts related to a series of home invasions and high-end vehicle thefts that occurred over a 13-day period in October 2023, as Global News Toronto first reported. Superior Court Justice Gillian Roberts delivered the verdict Friday, finding 22-year-old Bilal Abdelmouniim guilty after a week-long trial.
According to reporting from Global News Toronto, the crime spree took place across the Greater Toronto Area between Oct. 5 and Oct. 18, 2023. Crown prosecutors Alice Bradstreet and Anjali Rajan argued that Abdelmouniim was involved in six separate occurrences, typically taking place between 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Justice Roberts noted that the perpetrator used a consistent method for the first five incidents: using a large stone or block to smash a window next to an external door after scouting the home with a flashlight.
While the conviction marks a legal victory, the timeline of the events reveals a significant gap in police intervention. On Oct. 8, 2023, five individuals broke into a Tangmere Road residence, stealing a Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 (valued at about $300,000) and three high-end watches: a Patek Philippe Nautilis worth roughly $800,000, a Jacob & Co Epic X worth about $17,000, and a Jacob & Co Supreme 4 worth approximately $29,000. Global News Toronto reports that police located the stolen Maybach via a tracking device roughly 20 minutes after the theft. An officer followed the vehicle for about 10 minutes but lost it when the car accelerated to high speeds.
Despite this, police later that day found a black BMW parked in an underground lot on Sheppard Avenue West. In the early hours of Oct. 9, police installed a tracking device on that BMW. However, the crime spree continued. On Oct. 12, 2023, home invasions occurred on Lloyd Manor Road, resulting in the theft of a 2020 Mercedes Benz AMG worth approximately $280,000 and a 2021 Mercedes Benz GL worth approximately $60,000. Global News Toronto notes that tracking data confirmed the police-monitored BMW was in the vicinity of Lloyd Manor Road during the break-in.
The spree continued into the following week. On Oct. 16, 2023, thieves targeted a home on St. Leonard’s Avenue and stole two cars: a 2023 Mercedes Benz S580 valued at roughly $218,000 and a 2023 BMW X7 worth about $108,000. An earlier hit on Oct. 5 on Glencairn Avenue involved the theft of a 2023 Mercedes Benz GLS 580 worth approximately $150,000 and a 2024 Porshe 911 Turbo S valued at roughly $340,000.
Justice Roberts determined that Abdelmouniim was the perpetrator based on evidence identifying him as the man wearing a black puffy vest with a distinctive tear in the back. The judge stated that the only real issue in the trial was identity and concluded that all six occurrences were committed by the same person.
