According to reporting from Ars Technica, Amazon has confirmed it is investing in a natural gas-burning power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to supply a massive planned data center. The project is significant in scale; Cleanview, a firm tracking off-grid data center developments, reported that one permit indicates the plant would utilize 35 turbines to generate up to 7.65 gigawatts of power.

This shift toward self-supplied power is part of a broader trend among AI leaders. Ars Technica notes that companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and Anthropic have increasingly invested in ways to avoid permitting discussions and supply their own power. This follows a controversial lead by Elon Musk’s xAI, which began relying on gas turbines last spring for its Colossus data center.

Beyond the carbon footprint, the reliance on gas turbines poses public health risks, including contributions to lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, and asthma. While Amazon told Ars Technica that the plant is designed to transition to grid-connected service eventually and could potentially add energy supply for local customers, critics argue these future benefits are uncertain.
