Candidates weigh a proposed one-year moratorium as concerns grow over energy grid capacity, water usage, and data security.

The race for mayor in Mississauga has shifted focus toward the impact of AI data centers, which require significant energy and water resources. According to CBC Toronto, the debate follows a proposal for a facility the size of three football fields, leading Mississauga councillors to vote in July for a bylaw that would implement a one-year moratorium on data center development.

If passed during a final council decision on Wednesday, the moratorium would allow the city to consult with the industry and public while studying regulation and facility impacts. Three leading mayoral candidates have expressed support for the pause:

* **Dipika Damerla**, current Ward 7 councillor, pledged to protect the city's supply, power grid, and neighborhoods. Damerla stated she wants the province to define AI data centers, clarify electricity rate triggers, and provide answers regarding health impacts and community benefits. * **Bonnie Crombie**, former mayor, stated that residents need clear answers regarding local infrastructure costs, electricity supply, and water use. Crombie also raised concerns regarding Canadian sovereignty and data security, specifically questioning the potential for U.S. companies to own and operate these facilities. * **Alvin Tedjo**, Ward 2 councillor, noted that while data centers already exist in the city, foreign-owned AI facilities require stronger guardrails to protect the environment, land, and jobs.

Current Mayor **Carolyn Parrish** told CBC Toronto she is anticipating Wednesday's meeting, noting that the city has remained responsive to community concerns regarding the matter. A poll from research firm **Liaison Strategies** conducted in August indicates the race between Parrish and Crombie is currently neck and neck.
