Andreessen Horowitz shifts its digital asset unit's focus toward AI and robotics as blockchain investing falls out of favor.

As first reported by TechCrunch, Andreessen Horowitz announced Thursday that it is rebranding its a16z Crypto digital asset unit as a16z Frontier. The move comes as blockchain-focused investing recedes in importance.

Led by Chris Dixon, the practice has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds since its 2018 inception and has backed major sector players such as Coinbase. TechCrunch reports that a16z and other venture firms have spent years attempting to expand crypto's utility beyond speculative assets, trading apps, and financial rails.

Under the new a16z Frontier banner, the firm is expanding its mandate to include emerging technologies such as robotics, AI, and "new kinds of networks" that link machines and humans. Despite the name change, the group is not exiting the space; Dixon stated in a blog post that blockchain technology may provide "native economic capabilities" for these new networks.

General partners for a16z Frontier include Guy Wuollet, Eddy Lazzarin, and Chris Dixon. Additionally, The Information reports that Ali Yahya, who served as the strategy's first investor in 2017, has departed the firm.
