Rising operating costs and increased competition force the closure of the Mount Pleasant neighborhood fixture.

A long-standing fixture of the Yonge and Eglinton community is shutting its doors. Kenpik Fine Bulk Foods, located at 151 Manor Rd. E., will cease operations on Oct. 15, according to reporting from blogTO.

Opened in 2001, the store has served the area for 25 years. However, the business's owner, identified only as David, told blogTO that the shop has "no choice but to close down" due to the current economic climate and rising operating costs. David noted that business has declined to the point where he can no longer afford the rent, stating, "The rent is just too much."

Beyond the overhead costs, the business faced increased pressure from a nearby Bulk Barn that opened several years ago, which David says cut into the store's sales.

In preparation for the closure, Kenpik Fine Bulk Foods has placed all remaining inventory on clearance. The shop is also offering free scoops from a bin of excess utensils located by the front door. The store will remain open until 6:30 p.m. on its final day of business.
