The top-ranked Italian's absence opens a significant void in the New York draw and alters the championship landscape.

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner has officially withdrawn from the U.S. Open, as Sportsnet first reported. The Italian world No. 1 announced on Friday that he will not be ready for the start of the main draw on Aug. 30 due to a right knee injury.

Sinner has been sidelined since winning the Wimbledon title, where he defeated Alexander Zverev to secure his second consecutive championship at the All England Club. Because of the injury, Sinner previously withdrew from the hard-court warmup events in Cincinnati and Montreal. In a post on X, Sinner stated that despite working with his medical staff and team, and returning to the court in Monte Carlo over the last few days, he requires more time to recover.

Sinner's absence reshapes the competition for the title in New York. He entered the tournament as the 2024 U.S. Open champion, having defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets in that final. However, Sinner lost the title in the previous year's final to Carlos Alcaraz.

With Sinner out, the spotlight shifts toward Alcaraz, who has dominated the rivalry with Sinner, with the two meeting in the final three Grand Slam championships of 2025. Alcaraz, who won the last of those meetings with a four-set victory in New York, confirmed via social media on Thursday that he is ready to compete. Alcaraz had previously been out of action since April while recovering from a right wrist injury.
