New research suggests industry-specific AI is the key to overcoming the failure of general-purpose generative AI pilots.

General-purpose AI is struggling to meet corporate expectations due to a lack of relevance and accuracy, according to research from Aptean, as the Financial Post reported. This follows an MIT study which reported that 95% of generative AI pilots failed to provide measurable value.

Aptean’s 2026 Artificial Intelligence Research indicates that companies utilizing vertical, industry-specific AI outperformed those relying exclusively on general-purpose tools across seven of eight measured operational key performance indicators. TVN Reddy, CEO of Aptean, stated that 77% of leaders believe general-purpose AI cannot manage the complexity of their operations, describing the issue as a "mismatch of design" rather than a failure of the technology itself.

According to the findings, 88% of leaders view purpose-built AI—which is trained on domain-specific terminology, data, and compliance rules—as critical or very important. The primary drivers for this preference include more accurate and relevant outputs, easier integration with current systems, and better strategic guidance from vendors familiar with the sector.

Despite the potential of vertical AI, integration remains a significant hurdle. Eighty-two percent of respondents noted that integrating AI with core systems is more challenging than the AI technology itself. Consequently, 92% of respondents agreed their organization would benefit from external expertise, with system integration ranking as the top factor when selecting vendors.

Additionally, the research highlighted the emergence of "Shadow AI," noting that 40% of employees have bypassed company-sanctioned tools in favor of outside AI technologies following the failure of initial pilot programs.
