Universal Music Group doubles down on generative AI with a new ElevenLabs partnership, signaling a shift toward controlled, licensed creation tools.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is pivoting toward licensed AI integration through a multi-year agreement with ElevenLabs, as first reported by The Verge.

The partnership will launch an AI-powered platform allowing users to create mashups, remixes, and new interpretations using UMG's licensed music catalog. Artists under the label can opt-in or out of the project. ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski stated the collaboration ensures songwriters and artists are "fairly compensated" while creating new fan experiences.

This follows a string of AI moves by UMG, which is developing a platform with Udio and has signed licensing deals with Klay, Nvidia, and Spotify. Similarly, Suno recently launched a model trained on licensed content from BMG and Warner Music Group. The UMG-ElevenLabs platform will operate independently from ElevenLabs' Music API and ElevenMusic generator.

**Kenji's Take:** In my view, UMG is betting that the traditional, organic remix is dead. By shifting the creative process into a closed, licensed ecosystem, they aren't just protecting copyrights—they are attempting to own the very tools of creation.
