The tech industry is currently intoxicated by the 'magic' of spatial computing. Meta co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has characterized wearable eyewear as one of the fastest-growing categories of consumer electronics in history, a claim bolstered by Meta's own report that daily usage of its smart glasses has tripled year-over-year.

But as BetaKit first reported, this growth is happening without a corresponding conversation regarding the consent of those being recorded. As camera-equipped smart glasses—such as the Ray-Ban Meta—become harder to spot, the social contract of privacy is being rewritten without public input. This trend is accelerating; a Business of Fashion-McKinsey report suggests smart glasses sales could quadruple by 2026.

In this climate, the most innovative tool isn't the one capturing the image—it's the one alerting us that we are being watched.

Enter Marcos Rezende. A Brazilian Canadian product and UX designer who has worked at Microsoft and currently serves as a senior product designer at the Kitchener-Waterloo event marketing platform Hive, Rezende has developed NearLens. As BetaKit reports, the free iOS application functions by listening for Bluetooth signals associated with camera-equipped eyewear and tracking matches in real time.

Rezende has built NearLens with a rigorous commitment to privacy. According to BetaKit, the app has no backend, requires no accounts, does not compile analytics, and avoids third-party software development kits. Furthermore, the app does not access the user's own camera or microphone, nor does it identify the wearer.

The scale of the problem is evident in Rezende’s own field tests. In a trial at Ottawa’s TD Place Arena, NearLens detected 15 signals consistent with smart glasses among 7,000 people over a three-hour window. As App Developer Magazine noted, NearLens is a response to a growing gap in how these devices affect everyday privacy.

Rezende views NearLens as a temporary bridge until society determines how these devices should be regulated. Until the industry integrates transparency into the hardware itself, tools like NearLens are essential for anyone who believes that consent should not be optional in the digital age.
