But if you look past the sleek hardware, the real story isn't about innovation; it is about the systematic erasure of consent.
As BetaKit first reported, Meta CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has hailed wearable eyewear as one of the fastest-growing categories of consumer electronics in history. Meta further claims that daily usage of these glasses has tripled year-over-year. While the corporate suites celebrate these metrics, the public is left to deal with the fallout of a world where cameras are increasingly hard to spot and recording happens without the knowledge of the subject.
This isn't a hypothetical fear. A Business of Fashion-McKinsey report projects that sales of smart glasses will quadruple by 2026, driven by a wave of cheaper and sleeker options. As these devices proliferate, the gap in how they affect everyday privacy widens. We are moving toward a social contract where the right to not be recorded in public is being traded for the convenience of a few early adopters.
It is telling that the only way to reclaim a sense of agency is through the efforts of independent developers building 'detection' tools. Marcos Rezende, a senior product designer at the event marketing platform Hive and former Microsoft employee, has launched a free iOS app called NearLens. As BetaKit reports, Rezende’s app is designed to help users navigate this environment by listening for Bluetooth signals associated with camera-equipped eyewear, such as Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and tracking matches in real time.
Rezende’s project is a sobering indictment of the current tech trajectory. In an interview with BetaKit, he described NearLens as a temporary solution until society decides where these devices belong and how to handle them. The fact that a tool is needed to signal when someone in your vicinity might be actively recording you highlights a fundamental failure in the design of these products: they are built for the wearer's convenience, with zero regard for the privacy of the observed.
Rezende's own testing underscores the unpredictability of this surveillance. BetaKit reports that during a three-hour window at Ottawa’s TD Place Arena, NearLens detected 15 signals consistent with camera-equipped glasses among a crowd of 7,000 people. While the number may seem small relative to the crowd, it proves that the 'invisible eye' is already here, operating in the periphery of our public spaces.
To be clear, the solution isn't more surveillance. Rezende has been careful to ensure NearLens doesn't create its own privacy issues; he claims the app does not access microphones or cameras, does not identify the wearers, and does not confirm if footage is actually being captured. It is a defensive tool, not an offensive one.
But we cannot rely on 'detection apps' to solve a systemic crisis of consent. When the industry's goal is to make cameras invisible, they are effectively deciding that the consent of the recorded no longer matters. If we continue to prioritize the 'magic' of the hardware over the basic right to privacy, we aren't innovating—we are just building a more efficient way to watch each other without permission.
