Opinion: The Creator's Gateway: Why AI Tooling is the True Metaverse Battleground
In the discourse surrounding the metaverse, the focus often lingers on the platforms themselves. However, the more critical struggle is over the infrastructure that empowers the creators. The ability to lower the barrier to entry for non-professional developers is where the next generation of interactive entertainment will be won.
Consider the current state of Roblox. As BetaKit first reported, the platform is a juggernaut of user-generated content (UGC) with more than 151 million daily active users and seven million distinct "experiences." Yet, there is a significant gap between wanting to create a world and possessing the technical skills to actually build one. According to François Bélanger, co-founder of Élisa Interactive, creating these environments within Roblox typically requires substantial developer skills.
This is the gap that Montréal-based Élisa Interactive aims to bridge. The company, founded by François and Julien Bélanger, recently raised $875,000 in pre-seed funding from a group of angel investors and firms including Anges Québec, AQC Capital, and Investissement Québec’s Eurêka Fund. Their solution is an AI-powered level design tool called Me-Z-Scene.
Unlike generative AI that creates assets from scratch, Me-Z-Scene functions more as an intelligent assembler. François Bélanger compared the tool to a Playmobil toy set in a BetaKit interview, noting that while users can follow instructions, the true value lies in the ability to create a custom world. Users can describe a desired element—such as a village or a castle—and the tool places existing pieces to realize that vision, which can then be further modified by the user or the AI.
Interestingly, the tool wasn't originally intended for the masses. François Bélanger told BetaKit that Me-Z-Scene was first designed to remove "drudge work" for professional developers and game studios. However, the company discovered that serving professional studios required creating specialized versions of the technology for every client. This realization prompted a pivot toward a non-professional audience.
By plugging into the open nature of Roblox, Élisa Interactive is betting that the primary motivator for users isn't necessarily financial gain, but social connection. François Bélanger emphasized that the goal is to allow users to have fun with friends in custom environments rather than promising them significant profits.
While the current focus is Roblox, the implications extend further. François Bélanger noted to BetaKit that there is potential to expand this AI-driven creation model into other UGC-heavy titles, such as Fortnite or Minecraft.
As Me-Z-Scene prepares for a full-fledged launch this fall—following a testing phase with nearly 100 users—the company plans to implement a credit-based pricing model. The success of this venture suggests that the real value in the metaverse isn't just the destination, but the tools that allow anyone to build the road getting there.
