The African defense tech startup aims to reduce reliance on fragmented international supply chains by building autonomous systems and combat vehicles.

African defense tech startup Terra Industries has closed a $52 million seed round, as TechCrunch first reported. The company announced an additional $18 million in funding on Monday, following two earlier rounds totaling $11.75 million and $22 million. Investors in the seed round include Nova Global, Silent Ventures, and 8VC, a firm led by Joe Lonsdale that also backs Shield AI and Anduril.

Founded in 2024, Terra Industries is developing critical defense infrastructure and autonomous systems, including mine-detecting combat vehicles and drones. The company's objective is to become the dominant player in equipping nations with military infrastructure to address fragmented supply chains. TechCrunch reports that many African nations currently rely on China, Russia, or the West for security intelligence, leaving them vulnerable to destabilization.

Terra Industries identifies its primary competition as any defense company holding government contracts, specifically suppliers from the West, China, and Turkey. The startup plans to use the new capital to accelerate product deployment, increase hiring, and expand manufacturing across the Global South. Additionally, the company intends to open an office in London and establish a presence in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco to facilitate U.S. partnerships and capital access.

Financially, Terra Industries reports it is on track to generate revenue in the tens of millions of dollars by the end of the year and expects to book $100 million in contracts, which includes at least one federal contract.
