Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. Reach Contract Impasse

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Monday that the organization and fourth-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. have reached an impasse in contract negotiations, according to Sportsnet.

Porter, 26, is currently in the final year of the contract he signed after being selected with the first pick of the second round in 2023. While the Steelers have secured other members of that draft class, such as tight end Darnell Washington and outside linebacker Nick Herbig, Porter's future remains uncertain. During June's minicamp, Porter stated he believes he is one of the top players at his position and expects to be compensated accordingly, especially as the cornerback market has risen with recent deals for New England's Christian Gonzalez and Seattle's Devon Witherspoon.

Adding to the tension, Porter has not yet returned to the practice field. The team placed him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp citing a back issue that occurred during a mobility test. Sportsnet reports that Porter also essentially "held in" during minicamp, avoiding full 11-on-11 work while participating in individual drills.

McCarthy called the situation a challenge, noting that Pittsburgh's entire defensive staff is in its first season. He emphasized the need to separate the business side of the league from the football side, though he could not say when Porter would return. This comes as other players return to the fold; rookie first-round tackle Max Iheanachor and veteran defensive back Jalen Ramsey both returned to practice Monday.
