AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year-over-year, suggesting a shift toward intent-based discovery over traditional keyword rankings.

Shopify's second-quarter financial results indicate that AI search is acting as a growth engine for e-commerce rather than a replacement for traditional discovery. According to reporting from TechCrunch, AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year in Q2.

During an earnings call, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein stated that AI serves as a "complement to search" and has specifically benefited smaller merchants in the long tail of e-commerce. Finkelstein explained that while traditional search engines rank by popularity and keywords, AI agents utilize structured data to match products with specific buyer intent. For example, an AI agent can process multiple constraints—such as vehicle dimensions and quantity—simultaneously to find a specific product, whereas traditional search focuses on a single keyword.

This shift is compressing the buyer journey. Finkelstein noted that 50% of AI-referred sessions land directly on product description pages, a rate 2.5 times higher than traditional search. Furthermore, 75% of AI-attributed purchases in Q2 occurred outside of Shopify's top 100 categories.

Despite the AI surge, traditional search remains a primary traffic source, growing 1.3x over the last two years and accounting for approximately one-third of all storefront sessions. To further integrate these capabilities, Shopify has developed connectors for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, Vercel, and the vibe-coding platform Lovable.

Shopify's financial performance reflected these trends, with revenue rising 36% to $3.6 billion, exceeding Wall Street's $3.4 billion forecast. Gross operating profit grew 31% to $1.71 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.63 billion.
