US-based Shopify merchants can now integrate storefronts into the AI chatbot to feature products through marked advertisements.

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Ads within the Shopify App Store, marking Shopify as the first commerce partner for the AI giant, as BetaKit first reported. According to Shopify president Harley Finkelstein, the free-to-install integration enables Shopify merchants to sync their storefronts, establish ad budgets, and place marked product advertisements directly within the chatbot.

Currently, the service is limited to merchants in the United States. OpenAI stated that the app will expand to other international markets where ChatGPT Ads are available beginning September 23, though BetaKit noted it is seeking confirmation on whether this includes Canada.

Beyond standard ads, OpenAI has launched AI-powered marketing tools and "sponsored agents." These agents allow users to initiate direct conversations with a business after clicking an ad. This move aligns with Shopify's broader strategy to enhance "agentic commerce" and increase merchant discoverability, following similar partnerships with Microsoft and Google.

The integration targets a massive audience; a June report from Sensor Tower indicated that ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to reach one billion monthly active users in May. While that same report noted ChatGPT's market share fell below 50 percent for the first time earlier this year, the platform remains a primary target for Shopify's expansion into AI-driven shopping.
