The e-commerce giant becomes OpenAI's first commerce partner, allowing U.S. merchants to feature products directly within the AI chatbot.

Shopify is shifting toward agentic commerce with the launch of ChatGPT Ads, as BetaKit first reported. The integration, available via the Shopify App Store, enables merchants to sync their storefronts to the chatbot and manage ad campaigns within set budgets.

Currently, the tool is available only to Shopify merchants based in the United States. OpenAI stated that the app will expand to other international markets where ChatGPT Ads are supported beginning September 23.

Shopify president Harley Finkelstein noted that Shopify is the first commerce partner for OpenAI. This move follows similar partnerships Shopify established with Microsoft and Google to improve how merchants are discovered via chatbots. Beyond standard ads, OpenAI has introduced AI-powered marketing tools and "sponsored agents," which allow users to engage in direct conversations with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an advertisement.

The integration targets a massive audience; a June report from Sensor Tower cited by BetaKit noted that ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to reach one billion monthly active users in May, though its market share fell below 50 percent earlier this year.
