A new app allows U.S. merchants to sync storefronts and launch ad campaigns directly within the AI chatbot.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads within the Shopify App Store, marking Shopify as the AI giant's first commerce partner, according to Shopify president Harley Finkelstein.

As reported by BetaKit, the free-to-install integration enables Shopify merchants in the United States to sync their storefronts to ChatGPT and establish ad campaigns within specific budgets to feature products in marked advertisements. OpenAI stated that the app will expand to other international markets where ChatGPT Ads are available beginning September 23.

Beyond standard ad placements, OpenAI has introduced AI-powered marketing tools and "sponsored agents." These agents allow users to initiate direct conversations with a business-sponsored entity after clicking an ad.

This move aligns with a broader strategy from Shopify to enhance its agentic commerce capabilities. BetaKit notes that Shopify has previously established similar partnerships with Microsoft and Google to improve how merchants are discovered within chatbots.

A June report from Sensor Tower indicates that in May, ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to hit one billion monthly active users. While the same report indicates ChatGPT's market share fell below 50 percent earlier this year, it remains a significant target market for e-commerce operators.
