The e-commerce giant secures a high-profile web address from Market America to bolster its Shop web experience.
Shopify has purchased the shop.com domain from the U.S.-based e-commerce brokerage firm Market America, according to reporting from BetaKit. While Shopify declined to disclose the purchase price, the company stated that the acquisition is intended to provide consumers with a more seamless way to use Shop on the web to discover and purchase products from preferred brands.
Market America will transition its own online presence to MarketAmerica.com, a site currently being developed on the Shopify platform. This acquisition follows Shopify's 2025 purchase of the Canadian domain shop.ca for $536,000 CAD. BetaKit notes that Shopify is likely leveraging its significant capital—including quarterly revenues exceeding $3 billion USD—to strengthen its customer pipeline and branding.
The move highlights the high value of premium domain names; BetaKit points to historical sales such as business.com for $345 million USD and cars.com for $872 million USD. The shop.com address has changed hands previously, selling to Altura International in 2003 for $3.5 million USD ($4.9 million CAD) before being acquired by Market America in 2011 for an undisclosed sum.
Separately, Shopify announced the launch of Canvas, a design tool for merchants powered by the company's agentic AI Sidekick, as reported by BetaKit.
