The Hamilton-based startup is bypassing traditional donation models to sell hardware directly to Ukrainian entities.

Sentinel R&D, a defense tech startup based in Hamilton, is now selling drones directly to the Ukrainians, according to reporting from BetaKit. CEO and co-founder Kath Intson confirmed the move during the Nrth conference in Toronto, though she did not specify if the clients are Ukrainian firms, the military, or the government.

This direct sales model represents a departure from a previous joint venture between Sentinel R&D and Airlogix. In that earlier arrangement, the Canadian Commercial Corporation purchased drone components from Sentinel R&D to donate them to Ukraine for use in the conflict with Russia.

Intson told BetaKit that Western nations are currently "seriously outgunned" in modern warfare, which is defined by AI-powered, precision drones. She argued that military strategies and technologies are evolving rapidly, necessitating a move to the "bleeding edge" of development.

These shifts occur as the Canadian government attempts to accelerate drone procurement through the Defence Drone Initiative. Canada also established a digital procurement platform for drones and counter-drone systems, which BetaKit reports resulted in $50 million in total contracts awarded to six Canadian companies.

While Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy aims to diversify arms sales toward Europe and away from the U.S., the country faces hurdles, including mandates that certain components be manufactured within Europe.
