As Canada commits $6 billion to defense capabilities, a new summit aims to help software founders navigate the barriers of dual-use technology.
SAAS NORTH AI is partnering with Anvil and Dominion Dynamics to launch DEPLOY, a single-day summit scheduled for Nov. 5 in Ottawa. According to BetaKit, the event is designed for founders and investors seeking to enter or grow within the Canadian defense and dual-use technology markets.
The summit arrives amid a significant surge in national spending. BetaKit reports that under the federal Defence Industrial Strategy, the Canadian government has committed over $6 billion over five years to develop defensive capabilities, representing the largest investment of its kind since World War II.
Organizers intend to address three primary hurdles for entrepreneurs: identifying what to build, securing funding, and navigating the sales process. David Tyldesley, co-founder of SAAS NORTH AI, told BetaKit that many founders have been questioning their place in the defense build-out without receiving clear answers. Eliot Pence, founder of Dominion Dynamics, noted that entrepreneurs will build the next generation of Canadian defense tech, and DEPLOY will help them understand national defense requirements.
The demand for guidance is reflected in market data. BetaKit cites a June report from BDC which found that nearly 400 of the 600 small- and medium-sized businesses surveyed were actively seeking to enter the defense sector, though many remain in the early stages of exploration.
