New Ottawa-based event targets founders and investors navigating the operational hurdles of the Canadian dual-use defense market.
SAAS NORTH AI, Canada's largest in-person software-as-a-service conference, is partnering with AI firm Anvil and Dominion Dynamics to launch DEPLOY. The single-day summit, scheduled for Nov. 5 in Ottawa, is designed for early-stage founders and existing companies seeking to enter or grow within the Canadian defense and dual-use technology sector.
According to BetaKit, the event aims to address three primary operational barriers: determining what to build, securing funding, and mastering the sales process. David Tyldesley, co-founder of SAAS NORTH AI, noted that many founders have been questioning their place in Canada's defense build-out without receiving clear answers. Eliot Pence, founder of Dominion Dynamics, stated that entrepreneurs will build the next generation of Canadian defense tech, and DEPLOY is intended to help these firms navigate the specific requirements of national defense.
The push comes amid a significant spending surge. BetaKit reports that Canada is experiencing its largest defense-tech investment since World War II, highlighted by the federal Defence Industrial Strategy, which has committed over $6 billion over five years to domestic defensive capabilities.
Despite the available capital, many firms struggle with execution. BetaKit cites June reporting from BDC indicating that out of more than 600 surveyed small- and medium-sized businesses, nearly 400 expressed active interest in entering the defense sector, though many remain stalled in the early exploration phase.
