Toronto reunites with the former Finals MVP in a high-stakes move to add elite scoring to a rising roster.

The Toronto Raptors have officially completed a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers to acquire 35-year-old forward Kawhi Leonard, as BlogTO first reported. The move, which was processed Monday following a June 30 trade, reunites Leonard with the franchise he led to an NBA championship seven years ago.

Toronto is acquiring a high-volume scorer coming off one of his strongest recent campaigns. BlogTO reports that Leonard played 65 games last season, averaging 27.9 points per game and recording a 120.3 offensive rating—the fifth-highest in the NBA behind only Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, and Cade Cunningham.

The move comes as the Raptors look to build on their best season in six years. Despite being shorthanded without Brandon Ingram and Immanuel Quickley, Toronto pushed the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the first round of the playoffs, signaling a need for another difference-maker.

While Leonard remains an offensive powerhouse, his defensive metrics have fluctuated. BlogTO notes that in three of his last four seasons, Leonard posted the worst defensive rating of his career; last season, he allowed an estimated 114 points per 100 possessions, a nearly 10-point drop from his previous Toronto tenure. However, the team hopes to mitigate this by pairing Leonard with versatile defenders Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles.

Leonard enters the final year of his contract, and the Raptors are betting that his ability to elevate teammates and his elite scoring will justify the cost of the trade.
