In the software world, 'vibe coding'—the ability to build apps via simple prompts using tools like Lovable or Replit—is the current trend. Now, Toronto-based Blueprint is attempting to port that low-friction experience to the physical world.
As reported by BetaKit, Blueprint has pivoted from building autonomous delivery robots to creating a "language-to-hardware" platform. The goal, according to CEO David Feldt, is to eliminate the "slow and tedious" nature of traditional hardware design that typically requires deep human expertise. By allowing users to describe a gadget in simple language, the AI generates comprehensive project plans that cover mechanics, wiring, and specific off-the-shelf parts lists.
**The Build Process**
BetaKit notes that the platform doesn't just offer a vague idea; it provides granular instructions. For example, a user building an MP3 player would receive a list of specific screws to buy and instructions on which components to 3D print. While the system assumes the user has a 3D printer and basic soldering skills, it guides them step-by-step through assembly and electronic testing.
To date, the platform has seen significant traction, with BetaKit reporting over 175,000 users in three months and more than 200,000 generated plans. These range from drones and RC cars to more niche projects like pickleball launchers and even a urine-sampling machine prototyped by a medical device company executive in India.
**Funding and Growth**
This momentum has translated into investor interest. Blueprint recently announced it secured more than $1 million USD ($1.4 million CAD) as pre-seed funding. According to BetaKit, this total includes $225,000 USD in SAFEs from November and $820,000 USD in SAFE funding closed in May. The backers include Founders Inc, undisclosed angels, and a16z speedrun, the Silicon Valley accelerator where the team is currently based.
Co-founders David Feldt, COO Sajeel Purewal, and CTO Pranav Seelam intend to return to Toronto once the accelerator program concludes. The company is currently monetizing via annual and monthly subscriptions, focusing on improving parts selection and utilizing user data to refine design quality.
**The Long Game**
While the current tool is aimed at hobbyists and founders building "one of one" prototypes, the ambitions are larger. Sajeel Purewal told BetaKit the "North Star vision" is to evolve into a hybrid of Lovable and Amazon, where Blueprint either sources the components directly for the user or orchestrates the entire manufacturing process to deliver a finished product.
On the safety front, the company prohibits the design of explosives, ammunition, and firearms. However, BetaKit notes that compound bows are permitted as "consumer sporting goods," though the company continues to refine these policies.
