A 20% reduction in workforce and organizational flattening suggest CEO Jack Conte is prioritizing cost stability over aggressive growth.

Patreon is trimming its workforce by 20%, a move that signals a strategic shift toward a leaner cost structure. According to reporting from TechCrunch and The Verge, CEO Jack Conte informed staff on Thursday that the company is laying off 93 employees.

From a deals perspective, the move appears to be an effort to stabilize the balance sheet in response to shifting market dynamics. In a memo shared with employees, Conte stated that while the core business remains strong, the company must adjust its cost structure to remain stable. This is not the first time the company has sought efficiency; TechCrunch notes that Patreon previously cut 17% of its staff in 2022, a round of layoffs that included the closure of offices in Dublin and Berlin.

Beyond the immediate headcount reduction, the company is implementing a structural overhaul. Conte noted that Patreon is "flattening" its organizational chart and refocusing its teams around top priorities.

Central to this restructuring is the role of artificial intelligence. While Conte explicitly stated in his memo that the cuts are not being made because the company believes AI replaces humans, he acknowledged that AI has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry." According to TechCrunch, Conte noted that this transformation impacts how the company operates, organizes, builds products, and communicates.

Conte's internal posture on AI is one of necessity. In an interview with Decoder last month, as reported by The Verge, Conte asserted that Patreon is "100 percent embracing" AI tools internally. He warned that if the company failed to embrace these tools as a product and engineering firm to empower creators, Patreon would be "dead in three years."

Despite the internal adoption of AI, the company is taking a protective stance toward the creators it serves. TechCrunch reports that last week, Patreon partnered with Cloudflare to block AI bots from scraping creators' work without permission to train AI models, citing the increasing sophistication of AI scraping.

For those affected by the current layoffs, the company is providing a severance package consisting of at least 16 weeks of pay, plus one additional week for every year of service. Affected workers will also keep their health benefits through year-end and get a $1,500 allowance to replace their company-issued laptop.

**Opinion:** In the current venture climate, these cuts—combined with the "flattening" of the organization—suggest Patreon is moving away from a growth-at-all-costs model. By reducing overhead and optimizing operational efficiency through AI, the company is likely positioning itself for a more favorable valuation in a future funding round or a potential exit.
