Ontario Police Arrest 63 in Massive Internet Child Exploitation Bust

A massive joint law enforcement operation in Ontario has resulted in the arrest of 63 individuals and the laying of more than 200 charges related to the internet exploitation of children, according to reporting from Global News Toronto.

Dubbed "Project Time," the investigation took place throughout June and involved the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and 25 local police forces. The OPP reported that the operation consisted of 264 criminal investigations, with 154 of those remaining ongoing. To date, investigators have identified 51 victims.

According to the OPP, all 63 accused individuals are from Ontario. The group includes three teenagers under the age of 17, eight repeat offenders, and two individuals who held positions of authority and trust within their communities.

Detective Staff Sgt. Tara Clark, who leads the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Strategy for the OPP, stated in a news release that the operation's results show the effectiveness of collaboration and the pursuit of those who target vulnerable children.

As cases of online exploitation increase, the OPP emphasized that technology providers, government entities, child advocacy organizations, educators, and parents all have critical roles in ensuring child safety. Developed in 2006, the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet has made more than 6,000 arrests.
