The Swedish body-scanning startup, backed by Spotify co-founder David Ek, enters the U.S. market with a focus on preventative screening.

Neko Health has expanded its operations into New York, according to TechCrunch. Co-founded by Hjalmar Nilsonne and Spotify's David Ek, the Swedish company utilizes computer vision and advanced technology to screen for metabolic, skin, and blood-related issues.

The startup has raised nearly $1 billion in total funding and reports a global waitlist exceeding 300,000 people. The company's one-hour scan is priced at $500. While insurance does not cover the cost, TechCrunch reports the expense should qualify for those using Health Savings Accounts.

Farooq Abbasi of Preface Ventures, an investor in Neko Health, told TechCrunch that the company aims to address low preventative care utilization in the United States. Abbasi noted the evolution of the product's capabilities, stating that while his first scan involved 15 blood biomarkers, a subsequent scan included 55. He described the service as providing "actionable insights" rather than being a wellness fad.

Despite the expansion, TechCrunch notes that Neko Health faces significant hurdles in the U.S. regarding regulatory approval and the ability to scale its operations.
