The Montreal Victoire coach takes the helm as Canada looks to rebound from silver finishes at the 2026 Olympics and last year's world championships.
Hockey Canada announced Thursday that Kori Cheverie, the head coach of the Montréal Victoire, has been named the head coach of the women's national team for the 2026-27 season, as Sportsnet first reported. Cheverie will lead the squad at the upcoming IIHF women's world championship in Denmark, where Canada is scheduled to open Group B play against Sweden on Nov. 6.
Cheverie brings significant experience to the role, having served as an assistant coach for the gold-medal winning team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and contributing to first-place finishes at the world championships in 2021, 2022, and 2024. She joins a coaching staff that includes Kris Sparre, the head coach of the PWHL's expansion team in Hamilton, and Caroline Ouellette, who serves as Cheverie's assistant in Montreal, as assistant coaches.
The appointment comes as Canada seeks to improve upon recent performances, having taken silver at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics and the previous world championships in Czechia. The coaching staff was selected by a leadership group consisting of director of hockey operations Dylan Rockwell, senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations Scott Salmond, and general manager Danièle Sauvageau.
In addition to the coaching changes, Hockey Canada announced that Manon Rhéaume of the PWHL's Detroit expansion team and Michael Hirshfeld of the Ottawa Charge will serve as assistant general managers. Bruce Cassidy, previously the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, has joined the staff as a special assistant to Sauvageau for the season.
