The new AI agent aims to orchestrate tasks across Workspace and third-party apps from a single interface.

Google has announced a "universal" Gemini AI agent designed to manage work tasks across various devices and applications from a single interface, according to reporting from The Verge. Unveiled during the Gemini at Work event on Thursday, the tool is integrated into the Gemini Enterprise app.

The agent is built to operate in the background, maintaining consistent context across the web, desktop computers, and mobile devices because it runs in the cloud. While it works directly within Google Workspace apps—including Sheets, Docs, Drive, Calendar, and Gmail—it also extends to third-party platforms such as Microsoft 365 and Slack.

Google is positioning the tool as a comprehensive coordinator that can utilize job-specific sub-agents to execute tasks. Notably, the system can function as a "coworker agent," which includes its own dedicated identity and an email address formatted as "@agents.company.com." The system is designed to automatically select the AI model best suited for a specific task.

The universal agent is currently in private preview for enterprise customers. This rollout follows the May launch of the Gemini Spark agent, a consumer-facing version that handles tasks across the web and Workspace via a separate interface within the Gemini app.
