The collapse of two Canadian ventures highlights the volatility of the high-ticket home goods market following a pandemic-era spending surge.
Two Canadian e-commerce companies focused on the furniture sector, Cymax Group Technologies and CommerceBear, have reportedly shut down this year, as BetaKit first reported.
Cymax, founded in 2004, operated as a furniture marketplace and owned the shipping management platform Freight Club as well as the multichannel e-commerce platform Channel Gate. While Cymax did not confirm the closure to BetaKit, the company shared a LinkedIn post from Merchkit CEO Bijan Vaez regarding the shutdown, and senior leader David Tse stated he was assisting with the company's wind-down. Markus Frind, the majority owner and founder of Plenty of Fish, had recently stepped in as CEO in 2024 following the departure of former CEO Rizwan Somji.
Similarly, CommerceBear, which launched in 2019 to provide furniture manufacturers with e-commerce solutions for platforms such as Walmart, Amazon, and Wayfair, has also ceased operations. A source familiar with the company confirmed the shutdown to BetaKit, and the company's website currently shows a 404 error. Founder Sam Vlessing had previously raised $10.5 million USD by 2022 from investors including Inovia and Garage Capital.
According to BetaKit, the furniture market has been specifically impacted by a slowdown in growth following a consumer spending boom during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Bijan Vaez noted that retail brands are struggling with supply chain disruptions and inventory shortages driven by the trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
