Conflicting RCMP Narratives on Indian Government Involvement Surface

Conflicting statements from senior Canadian law enforcement officials have emerged regarding the role of the Indian government in the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, according to reporting from CBC News.

Last week, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Lisa Moreland told CBC's *Power & Politics* there is "no evidence" linking Indian government officials to the crimes investigated during the joint "Operation Hard Ball," which targeted three India-based organized crime gangs. Moreland stated that neither the charges nor the indictment suggest Indian officials were involved.

This position contradicts previous assertions made by other high-ranking officials. CBC News reports that on Oct. 14, 2024, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme stated that agents of the Indian government were conducting a "widespread" campaign of violence in Canada. Duheme previously claimed the RCMP possessed "strong evidence" that these activities reached the "highest level" of the Indian government. Similarly, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the RCMP had "clear and compelling evidence" of activities posing a threat to public safety, including murder.

David Morrison, who currently serves as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s senior diplomatic and international affairs adviser, also pointed to India’s Home Minister Amit Shah as the individual issuing the orders.

When asked about the discrepancy, the RCMP issued a statement emphasizing that no charges have been laid against any Indian government official in the transnational organized crime investigation. The RCMP noted that while Operation Hard Ball is ongoing, the Nijjar homicide remains a separate investigation led by the RCMP integrated homicide investigation team.
